There are more podcasts today than ever, and while the “starting a podcast” notion has become a joke, who doesn’t love a good podcast? As film fanatics, there are countless film industry podcasts, ranging from bros talking about movies to getting into the nitty-gritty of the filmmaking podcast.
As a result, I think it’d be helpful to discuss a few of my favorites and ones that are great for indie filmmakers. These podcasts offer something beneficial in more ways than one, ranging from specific filmmakers discussing their film to a few guys talking about flicks. Let’s discuss it!
Why Podcasts Are Useful
Have you watched many movies but never studied film? Podcasts are a fantastic way to learn about film history, film as an art form, and film criticism.
Plenty of podcasts can help you dive deeper into these topics while you exercise. They can be entertaining or funny, serious, and engaging–all while expanding your film knowledge. Podcasts are a great way to make your engagement with movies more meaningful and enrich your thoughts about them.
The A24 Podcast
Yes, A24 has a podcast too for all of you hipsters! A24 pairs two people from different projects for an hour-long conversation about whatever they want. New episodes come out every few weeks to a few months.
I love the format of two actors, directors, or producers simply conversing. Sometimes, they dive into the film they’re promoting or discuss the technical aspects of filmmaking, and other times, it’s just a free-flowing chat. I especially enjoy it when no host is steering the conversation–just film industry folks casually talking.
The Filmcast
The Filmcast has been around for ten-plus years, and rightfully so. The hosts have fantastic chemistry and engaging banter; their reviews are always insightful.
The podcast mainly focuses on film industry discussions, movie series, and films they’ve recently watched. One central review of a current release can last up to an hour, including a spoiler discussion at the end.
While they keep the personal stuff to a minimum, there’s still some fun banter and inside jokes, often around their movie-watching experiences–like the difference in perspectives between the two hosts with kids and the one without.
Indiewire: Screen Talk
Indiewire’s Screen Talk is an essential podcast for keeping up with new releases, festivals, and the future of the business. Hosted by Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio, the chemistry and information presented on the pod make it a must-listen for any film fanatic.
I discover most new films from festivals through it, and if any of these films make it to theaters near me, I try to catch them.
Pre-Production Podcast
I’ve been a massive fan of Chris Stuckman since high school, and I continue to tune in whenever he discusses a movie I’m interested in. Now that Chris has become a filmmaker with his upcoming horror debut in Shelby Oaks, there’s much to admire about the YouTuber turn-filmmaker.
Also a part of this new journey is Chris’s Pre-Production Podcast, where Chris discusses a filmmaker’s journey into their first feature. The episodes are sporadic, but there’s usually a new episode every month or two. I’m excited to see how Shelby Oaks turns out, and I couldn’t be happier for him.
Joe and Raanan Talk Movies
Joe and Raanan are my two favorite people to talk movies on the web. The podcast floats everywhere, from the two comics cracking jokes and discussing personal tales to ripping on one another for their film opinions. What makes the podcast even more enjoyable is how the two are venturing into filmmaking themselves with Raanan Herschberg’s upcoming short Memory Room and Joe List’s upcoming documentary Tom Dustin: Portrait of a Comedian.
