Hollywood's New Directing Pipeline Isn't Film School. It's YouTube.

Here's an uncomfortable headline for anyone grinding through the traditional route right now, spec script, agent, table read, option: some of the biggest horror hits of the last three years weren't written by anyone in that pipeline at all. They were made by YouTubers.
Danny and Michael Philippou spent nearly two decades running RackaRacka, a YouTube channel of stunt comedy and gore skits, before their feature debut Talk To Me turned a $4.5 million budget into $92.2 million worldwide. That's enough to surpass Hereditary as A24's highest-grossing horror film domestically. Kane Parsons built a lo-fi CGI following around one unsettling internet image, the Backrooms creepypasta, and is now directing a feature adaptation for A24 with James Wan producing. Curry Barker's short work convinced A24 he had exactly the tonal control the studio looks for, and Obsession has since crossed $400 million worldwide on a budget reported under $1 million. Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach self-funded and self-distributed Iron Lung, a $3 million adaptation of an indie video game, and it earned more on its opening day than plenty of studio horror films make in a full weekend.
None of these people came up through a writers' room.
