8 of the Best Wild West Films

The Western genre is as vast as the pairies of the American West, despite the fact that ultimately, they all tend to boil down to a few elements, among which we usually find horses, guns and poker. It’s quite a difficult task to pick 8, and once I had a final list I realised I missed so many others I would have liked to include. But no matter, here are 8 of my favourites – a lits that I made trying to balance classics with slightly more recent gems in the Western genre. From gun-slinging showdowns to epic tales of frontier justice, these movies will transport you to a time when the West was wild and anything could happen.

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

This classic spaghetti western from maestro Sergio Leone is a must-watch for any cowboy aficionado. Starring Clint Eastwood as the enigmatic “Man with No Name,” the film follows three gunslingers as they vie for a fortune in buried Confederate gold. With its iconic score and epic showdowns, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is a true masterpiece of the genre.

2. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

Saddle up for a wild ride through the Old West with this anthology film from the Coen Brothers. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” weaves together six vignettes, each offering a unique take on life on the frontier. From the eponymous singing cowboy to a wagon train journey fraught with danger, this film captures the spirit of the Wild West in all its rugged glory.

3. Django Unchained (2012)

Quentin Tarantino puts his own spin on the spaghetti western with “Django Unchained.” Set in the pre-Civil War South, the film follows Django (Jamie Foxx), a freed slave who teams up with a German bounty hunter (the excellent Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner (Leonardo di Caprio). With its sharp dialogue and explosive action, “Django Unchained” is a thrilling ride from start to finish.

4. True Grit (2010)

The Coen Brothers strike gold once again with this gritty remake of the classic western. Starring Jeff Bridges as the grizzled U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as the determined young Mattie Ross, “True Grit” follows the unlikely duo as they track down the outlaw who killed Mattie’s father. Filled with memorable characters and stunning landscapes, this film is a modern classic of the genre.

5. The Magnificent Seven (1960)

A group of hired guns is tasked with protecting a small Mexican village from marauding bandits in this iconic western from director John Sturges. Featuring an all-star cast including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson, “The Magnificent Seven” is a thrilling tale of courage and redemption that has stood the test of time. A sidenote here – there is a 2016 remake starring Denzel Washington, Christ Pratt and Ethan Hawke that I have not watched, but I heard it’s quite decent.

6. Unforgiven (1992)

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this revisionist western that explores the darker side of the frontier myth. Eastwood plays William Munny, a retired gunslinger who reluctantly takes up his six-shooter one last time to avenge a prostitute’s brutal assault. With its morally ambiguous characters and haunting cinematography, “Unforgiven” is a powerful meditation on violence and redemption – and to this day the last Western to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

7. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

Sergio Leone’s epic tale of revenge and greed unfolds against the backdrop of the American frontier. Featuring an iconic score by Ennio Morricone and breathtaking cinematography, “Once Upon a Time in the West” follows a mysterious stranger (Charles Bronson) as he faces off against a ruthless railroad tycoon (portrayed by Henry Fonda) determined to seize land from the widow of a murdered outlaw.

8. Tombstone (1993)

Get ready for a showdown at the O.K. Corral with this action-packed western starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. “Tombstone” tells the story of Wyatt Earp and his brothers as they take on a gang of outlaws led by the ruthless Curly Bill Brocius. With its memorable one-liners and adrenaline-fueled shootouts, this film is a wild ride from start to finish.
