Have you been trying to make up your mind which series from Netflix you want to start, but you’re constantly put off by the huge numbers of seasons that your top picks have under their belts? No problem – perhaps you should check out something different, which has been released in 2021 and therefore only has one season. Much more manageable – take a look at the following 4 titles.
1. Lupin (France)
I quite liked this one – it’s no masterpiece, and the plot can sometimes be a little bit thin and weirdly paced, but on the whole, it’s a very enjoyable watch. Inspired by the adventures of Arsene Lupin, gentleman thief Assane Diop schemes an elaborate plot in order to clear his father’s name of the injustice it suffered years prior to the plot. The highlight here is Omar Sy’s acting – he manages a very layered and complex portait of a likeable character. The 6 episodes released so far are part 1 of the first season, so expect more come summer.
2. Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer (US)
Netflix has produced some high quality material when it comes to the subject of serial killers in recent years – remember Mindhunter? Well, Night Stalker is a limited docu-series exploring the hunt for one of the most notorious serial killers in the history of the US. It’s just 4 episodes, with a total watching time of just over 3 hours – there are many theatrical films longer than that, so I think this is perfectly manageable .
3. Fate: The Winx Saga (UK)
British teens seem to always have a knack for magic. And while Bloom is no Harry Potter and Otherworld is no Hogwarts, there are many similarities to be drawn to JK Rowling’s famous series about kids with magic. For starters, there is magic – and the ones who possess this power are fairies instead of wizards. Moreover, it’s a coming of age story, which also links with a drama on a grander scale. Not excellent, but rather passable.
4. Pretend It’s A City (US)
So far, we had Parisian thiefs, serial killers and people who do magic. How about something more grounded in reality? Sure – here is a sort of biographical talk show about nothing in particular and everything in the same time. The episodes are comprised of a series of conversations between Martin Scorsese and Fran Lebowitz. The two discuss about New York City, reading, cigars and a whole lot of other things. If this sounds like your thing, give it a try!
