The newest football films rarely trust a clean 90-minute rise from defeat to victory. Between 2021 and 2026, directors have used the 1986 World Cup, American Samoa’s record loss, the Homeless World Cup, a volatile Spanish prospect, and Roberto Baggio’s injuries to examine what surrounds the match. These are fiction features, even when real tournaments or players supply the frame. Their place in an all-time canon is not settled yet.

Mexico 86 Finds the Match Behind Closed Doors

Gabriel Ripstein’s Mexico 86 premiered on Netflix on June 5, 2026, with Diego Luna playing Martín de la Torre alongside Daniel Giménez Cacho and Karla Souza. The comedy-drama follows the campaign to bring the 1986 World Cup to Mexico after original host Colombia withdrew. Mexico had staged the tournament in 1970, so the successful switch made it the first country to host twice. Rather than building toward a decisive goal, the film watches bureaucrats, political operators, and football officials fight over access to the event.

Rome Hosts a Tournament That Exists, and a Story That Does Not

Thea Sharrock’s The Beautiful Game arrived on Netflix on March 29, 2024, with Bill Nighy as England coach Mal and Micheal Ward as gifted striker Vinny. The Homeless World Cup is a real street-football competition, but Rome has not hosted it, and the film’s characters are fictional composites inspired by former participants interviewed during development. That distinction improves the viewing: the five-a-side matches carry recognizable rules and pressure without pretending to reconstruct one national team’s exact history. The tournament scenes also used people from the Homeless World Cup network alongside the actors.

American Samoa and Seoul Take Different Routes to the Same Goal

Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins (2023) dramatizes American Samoa’s recovery from its 31-0 defeat by Australia in 2001, with Michael Fassbender playing coach Thomas Rongen before the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign. The film reshapes material previously covered in Mike Brett and Steve Jamison’s 2014 documentary, using comedy where the nonfiction version stays closer to the squad. Lee Byeong-heon’s Korean film Dream (2023) centers on a mismatched group of homeless men preparing for an international tournament under a coach who never expected to be there, played by Park Seo-jun, while IU plays the filmmaker documenting their journey. As inspiring as these stories can be, moving into football betting (Arabic: مراهنات كرة القدم) is less about emotion and more about keeping a clear head: checking lineups, tracking how odds shift, understanding margins, and knowing exactly how much you’re willing to risk instead of getting swept up in the story.

The Champion Keeps the Camera on the Asset

Carlos Therón’s Spanish drama The Champion arrived on Netflix in July 2024, with Swit Eme, Dani Rovira, and Pablo Chiapella in the cast. It follows a talented player benched after a fight and paired with an academic tutor meant to help him confront the insecurity and poor choices shaping his reputation. The film keeps details like his club and age deliberately vague, leaving those specifics off the table. The film works better as a study of how a club manages talent that can damage its own value.

Baggio’s Penalty Is Famous, but the Shootout Was Already Breaking

Letizia Lamartire’s Baggio: The Divine Ponytail (2021) stars Andrea Arcangeli and follows Roberto Baggio’s injuries, conflicts with coaches, and turn toward Buddhism. Its unavoidable image is the 1994 World Cup final shootout against Brazil, which ended 3-2 after a scoreless match. Franco Baresi had already missed and Daniele Massaro had already been denied before Baggio sent Italy’s fifth kick over the bar. Anyone checking MelBet (Arabic: ميل بيت) around a biographical film should still compare team news, settlement rules, KYC access, line movement, and the share of bankroll placed on one result rather than reducing an entire match to its final kick.

A New Canon Still Has to Survive Rewatching

Lately, football films have started to move beyond the usual rise-to-glory storyline. Mexico 86 pokes fun at the politics of hosting, while The Beautiful Game and Dream focus on tournaments with a social angle. Next Goal Wins questions what an underdog story really looks like, and The Champion looks at player development through the lens of risk and pressure. Whether these films will stand alongside
