Despite societal progress and the accelerating shift toward atheism, people’s fascination with rituals rooted in paganism continues to survive. Nevena Nikolova is not, however, a director who flirts with occultism or medieval witchcraft practices, but her short film draws deeply on people’s belief in a form of salvation that transcends the conventions of reality. ‘Freckles‘ can thus be seen as a Balkan version of magical realism in the sense that it illustrates with disarming naturalness the contact between two women who see in the ancestral wisdom of herbal manipulation and potions a possibility to change their destiny. The feminist implications are inherent but not necessarily a priority. What really stands out, beyond the pretext of the narrative itself is the emotional chemistry between the characters, which reflects a bitter reality specific to dysfunctional couples dominated by extreme domestic violence.

Following physical abuse from her husband, Katia tries to find a way out with the help of old Zaka, a potion specialist. It is time for the young woman to make a choice that will decisively change her destiny. The question is whether she is ready for it.

Without spectacular resolutions or melodramatic exaggerations, the short film maintains a tempered tone while accumulating symbolic details relevant to understanding the characters’ subsequent evolution. Inspired by medieval imagery and folkloric rituals, Nevena Nikolova orchestrates deceptively simple material supported by a concise script that is relevant to understanding the psychological and social stakes proposed by the story. The genuineness with which she captures the interaction between the protagonists, without ignoring the juxtaposition of the two worlds that coexist in the same space (everyday reality and the capsule of this “refuge” that survives despite history) challenges the viewer to carefully observe all the constituent details. Supported by the work of professional actresses who deliver two roles that are both fragile and daring, ‘Freckles’ is an achievement that we are delighted to award at our festival.

For the professionalism and naturalness with which it depicts a fragment of magical realism that reflects the dysfunctions of society, ‘Freckles’ was awarded the Film of the Month distinction in the May 2025 edition of TMFF.
