The water may rise tells the story of the couple Jan and Marie in their flight from the water during the inundation of Walcheren (De Slag om de Schelde in 1944). The island of Walcheren is one inland sea. Roads are covered with silt and sand or destroyed. Houses are under water and about to collapse. Residents of Walcheren are looking for a safe haven. Jan and Marie are on a boat on their way to Middelburg with their most important belongings and furniture. On their way to dry feet. During this trip, Jan and Marie’s relationship is put to the test.
