June 1914: Having completed their art school training in Boston as portrait painters, Fred Demmler (1888–1918), from Pittsburgh, and Alexander James (1890–1946), from Cambridge, Massachusetts, head to London on the first leg of their grand tour of the museums of Europe, not having any clue about how Aleck’s uncle, the novelist Henry James (1871–1916), and the sudden outbreak of the First World War will crush their plans and alter their friendship.
