Best Movies About Horse Racing

Horse racing is one of the oldest sports in history that dates back to 680 B.C.E in ancient Greece at the Olympic Games. Back then, horse racing was very different. First of all, it was called the Chariot races and it was a four-horse racing event that attracted many people.

Horse racing has a deep impact on our culture, which is no surprise when we see a lot of directors inspired by horse racing events from the past. With that said, we decided to cover some of the best horse racing movies that every horse enthusiast must watch.

Secretariat

If you watched Bojack Horseman, you definitely heard for Secretariat. Most people would agree that the Secretariat is the greatest horse racing movie of all time, and it is hard to go against that. The movie is released back in 2010 and it is an American biographical sports drama that highlights the career of Secretariat, which is a Thoroughbred racehorse who managed to win the Triple Crown back in 1873.

This is a Walt Disney Pictures production filmed in Kentucky. The movie also shows the historical characters who led Secretariat to success, specifically, Penny Chenery, the horse’s owner, the French-Canadian trainer Lucien Laurin and, of course, the jockey Ron Turcotte.

After her mother’s death, Penny takes over the family’s Thoroughbred breeding farm, and despite her inexperience in this industry, she manages to win the Triple Crown. It is an impressive movie with a 7.2/10 IMDb rating.

Seabiscuit

There is no surprise that Seabiscuit got second place in our top horse racing movies. This movie is about the unexpected success of a small Thoroughbred racehorse that won the record amount of prize money back in 192 and became the symbol of hope for Americans during the Great Depression.

This movie is based on actual events where three men with troubled pasts came together to produce a champion racehorse that went against the odds. Charles S. Howard was on the search of a racehorse when he hired horse trainer Tom Smith who later discovered Seabiscuit.

At the beginning of his career, Seabiscuit was trained to lose in order to grow confidence, which later proved to be a great strategy.

It is an impressive movie with a 7.3/10 rating on IMDb and you should definitely watch it.

Dreamer

This is another charming American sports drama that is heart-melting to watch. The movie is about the healing journey of a horse who suffers from a broken leg injury. The Dreamer is another true story movie highlighting the story of the Thoroughbred filly Mariah’s Storm.

Ben (the trainer) warns the owner of Sonador about unusual warmth in her legs that might cause injury, but the owner decides to race her anyway. That’s where Sonador ends up with a broken leg and it is transported back to Ben’s tiny farm to heal.

Ben’s daughter Cale falls in love with the horse and does everything that she can do to help her. After a while, Cale makes a bold move and decides to ride the horse once again, hoping that she is fully recovered from the injury. She becomes one of the most successful horse races at that time, winning the prestigious Breeder’s Cup Classic.

The Black Stallion

One of the most magical and fun to watch horse racing movies is the Black Stallion which was released back in 1979. Even though we are talking about a more than 40-year-old movie, it is still one of the classics that every horse lover must watch.

The movie is based on a children’s novel by Walter Farley where the main character is Alec Ramsey, a young boy who is shipwrecked on a remote island. Later he discovers that he is in the company of a wild Arabian stallion and he earned the horse’s trust after saving him from a rattlesnake.

After returning home with the horse, the stallion runs away from Alec, but later they have reunited again where the Stallion shows its impressive speed. He will decide to race the horse and despite the injury, the stallion will manage to wind thanks to the special bond with Alec.

It is a great Saturday night adventure movie with a 7.3/10 IMDb rating that every horse race enthusiast must watch.
