The World of Underground Experts: Documentaries That Showcase Hidden Talents

Documentaries are a popular form of entertainment viewing. They can provide an insight into world events and the lives of individuals to the masses. They can tell stories and highlight things that may have happened that were either unbelievable or need to be seen to be believed.

The great thing about documentaries is that they can highlight people who have hidden talents. They can amplify these things and give the individuals or groups the spotlight that they may deserve (or not) and provide them with the platform to increase their profiles.

Documentaries aren’t limited to a specific genre, either. They can be made based on almost anything. For this reason, this is why they have become extremely popular with viewers. Viewers who use streaming sites have widely enjoyed true crime documentaries in recent years. In the past, shows based on an individual’s lifestyle, history, or global historical events have always made a great idea for a show.

When We Were Kings (1996)

Muhammad Ali is one of the greatest sportspeople to have ever graced the Earth. He is as big as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Pele in their respective sports and their outside influence. As a result, he was a man that many loved to learn as much as they could about him, especially when they saw who he was outside of boxing.

Born Cassius Clay, Ali may have been a great fighter with his hands, but he was also a brilliant fighter with his mouth as an activist. The “When We Were Kings” documentary followed his day-to-day account during a trip to Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1984 before he beat the undefeated George Foreman to become the undisputed heavyweight champion once again in a fight that was billed “The Rumble in the Jungle”. The bout would go down in history as “arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century,” making it a great theme for the documentary.

Phil Ivey: The Tiger Woods of Poker (N/A)

If you’ve been playing at the best poker site, you’ll have wanted to master your skills before hitting the tables. Some will do this by watching a documentary on the biggest players of the game, including Phil Ivey, who has won millions playing online and at the tables.

In “Phil Ivey: The Tiger Woods of Poker” , we get an incredible insight into how one of the greatest players in the history of the game thinks and strategizes to ensure he is one of the individuals at the final table of any tournament. The show begins with his early days, before going on a journey with him and highlighting how he managed to make it to the big time. By studying what he does, players can learn a thing or two that they can implement into their own games.

A Band Called Death (2012)

As mentioned, documentaries can shine a light on those that deserve it. Sometimes, things happen in life that aren’t always fair or accurate. The documentary called “A Band Called Death” helps to showcase just one instance whereby this is the case.

Based on the story of three musician brothers from the Hackney family, it looks at the band in a way that shows they were arguably the pioneers of punk-rock music. They’ve been labelled as being “ahead of their time” as they continually refused to bow down to pressures to change their name from ‘Death’. Some 30 years later, their story was discovered and told to audiences worldwide.

Man on Wire (2008)

In 1974, Philippe Petit decided to try and show the world his talent. However, he tried to do it in one of the most extraordinary ways: walk a tightrope between New York’s Twin Towers. It wasn’t the first big stunt that he tried, as he became famous for his decision to do the same with the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1971 and Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973.

The “Man on Wire” documentary was shot in a way that helped to showcase what the Frenchmen would go through to make the stunt happen. It features accounts from those on the inside, while creating re-enactments. The documentary’s greatest appeal is perhaps that it was shot as if it were a heist movie, however it doesn’t take away from the hidden talent that Petit has and was daring enough to show everyone.
