You’ve seen Cannes, you’ve seen Toronto, now come see Glasgow.

If you’re a lover of film festivals, then you’ll know that the Glasgow Film Festival is just about to kick off at the Glasgow Film Theatre once again.

The annual movie festival is known for its appreciation of the latest and greatest works from all around the world, as well as its dedications to classics that shouldn’t be forgotten. Running from the 2nd to the 13th of March, there is a lot to see in a short amount of time.

We’re breaking down what our top picks for the festival are. We’ve got something for animation fans, something for fans of the classics, and something for the world cinema fans. Read on for all the details.

Fire (Both Sides of the Blade)

Sara and Jean are living a happy life together, one that radio journalist Sara wouldn’t trade for anything.

And yet, when an old flame comes back into their lives, Sara sees herself regressing. The three of them all share a history, where Francois was the one loved before Jean. A business opportunity too good to pass up puts them all in the same circles again, and Sara has to fight old feelings as they bubble back to the surface.

It’s a movie for melancholy addicts; if you don’t like your good feelings mixed in with your bad, perhaps play Casino777 blackjack, watch a cat video on YouTube or check your social media feeds instead?

Where is Anne Frank?

Having materialized in the Anne Frank Museum, Kitty is very confused. There is a raging storm outside and even though her diary is here, Anne is nowhere to be seen.

Told from the perspective of the friend Anne Frank was writing to in her famed diary, Kitty wanders Amsterdam looking for her friend, assuming she too has materialized in the modern city. Intercut with flashbacks of Anne’s experiences in Nazi occupied Amsterdam, this animated movie creates a love letter to refugees, and a reminder of what can occur if history doesn’t learn from its mistakes.

From the director of Waltz with Bashir, another animated movie focusing on the effects of war, this movie promises to be a tender look at the famed refugee and her plight.

Cleo from 5 to 7

If you’re a fan of French wave cinema, you’ll not want to miss Cleo from 5 to 7. This story is exactly what it says on the tin: we follow Cleo as she goes about her afternoon in real time. But she has something on her mind. The doctor is doing some tests, and she is waiting on the results.

A gorgeous woman, she’s aware of it, and the movie is filled with mirrors as she goes about her day, worried that her beauty might not only be temporary, but snatched from her sooner than she expected. But as her journey evolves, so does her perspective, and ultimately, she turns hopeful, no matter what the doctor has to say.

It’s a statement around beauty standards that wasn’t common to see in the 60’s, when it was made, and makes for a refreshing watch today.
